Warriors to the Wall

DAYS 1-3
Shanghai City
You’ll begin your trip to China with an overnight flight to the glittering city of Shanghai, where you’ll board the high-speed Maglev train and be whisked off to your hotel, the Sunrise on the Bund. This is where you’ll be based for the whole of your stay in Shanghai.

The afternoon is yours to explore. As you’re already on the Bund, you could decide to take a stroll along the waterfront lined with old colonial buildings. Gaze across the river to take in the famous Shanghai skyline, including the Shanghai Tower, now the second tallest building in the world. Cameras at the ready!

In the evening, watch a spellbinding performance by Shanghai Acrobatics. These talented - not to mention incredibly supple - Chinese acrobats will perform mind-boggling contortions and balance tricks that will make you gasp in disbelief.

The next morning, you’ll see a different side to Shanghai on a Jeep tour, discovering some of the city’s highlights and back streets off the beaten track. Your afternoon is free to do whatever you choose. We suggest a visit to the exquisite Yu Gardens, or perhaps a browse of the shops along Nanjing Road, where you’ll be able to pick up a few souvenirs for your friends.

DAYS 4-5
Xi'an city
The next stage of your journey takes you to Xi'an, one of the oldest cities in China. After your flight arrives, you’ll be transferred to the Mercure Hotel on Renmin Square. Once you’ve had a chance to unpack and freshen up, you'll be all set for an evening walk through the atmospheric Muslim Quarter, an area of Xi'an's old town that dates back to the ancient Silk Road.

The following morning you’ll head out of the city to gaze out over the ranks of the incredible Terracotta Army – a must-see on any trip to Xi’an. Around 8,000 clay soldiers, together with horses and chariots, are buried within three pits here. Each warrior has a unique facial expression and hairstyle.

On your return to Xi’an, you’ll be able to get active with a cycling tour along the ancient city walls. This should help you work up an appetite for your evening treat of a dumpling dinner.

DAYS 6-9
Beijing City
It’s time to bid farewell to Xi’an and take the bullet train to Beijing in first class. To kick off your time in China's bustling capital, you’ll visit the spectacular Summer Palace and enjoy a boat trip over Kunming Lake. After a tour of this former royal playground, you’ll head to the Shichahai Shadow Art Performance Hotel in the historic Hutong district where you’ll be based for the remainder of your trip.

To get you feeling properly chilled out and at one with yourself, the next morning starts with a tai chi lesson at the Temple of Heaven. You’ll also enjoy a tour of this magnificent imperial complex where the emperor used to pray for a good harvest. Other highlights of Day 7 include visits to the vast Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, as well as a walking tour of the Hutong district to experience traditional Beijing culture.

We’ve saved one of the best trips for last – on Day 8 you’ll be heading out of Beijing to spend a full day exploring the Great Wall of China. This iconic sight is truly extraordinary – no picture can quite prepare you for the reality of seeing it close up. During your time here, you’ll enjoy a picnic lunch at Jinshanling, one of the more remote sections of the wall where you can escape the crowds.

The next day, you’ll fly home from Beijing, taking with you some incredible memories – and hopefully plenty of photos – from your Chinese adventure.
