1-4
Tokyo
City
The first day of your trip will see you travel to Tokyo, but the second day is when the real fun begins. You will meet your guide and check into the four-star hotel which will be your base for the first leg and prepare for the adventures ahead by validating your rail passes. Following that, it is time to explore this incredible futuristic metropolis and you may choose to use your free time to see some of its most breathtaking landmarks, such as the 634 meter Tokyo Skytree – one of the tallest structures in the world – offering incredible views of the city.

Day 3 is an opportunity to head back in time to discover the country's rich heritage with a visit to the majestic Imperial Palace, as well as the ancient Buddhist temple of Sensoji and the bustling shopping streets of the Asakusa district of the city. From there you will take the subway to Shibuya to see the Meiji Shrine, a beautiful structure built in 1920 and dedicated to the spirit of the emperor of the same name.

Following all that sightseeing, it is then time to spend your final day in Tokyo seeking adventure and excitement by cruising along jungle rivers, tackling Big Thunder Mountain and enjoying a host of other rides at the city’s impressive 115-acre Disneyland resort – which was the first Disney theme park outside of the US when it opened its doors back in 1983.

Yudanaka

The next part of your trip will see you wave goodbye to the bright lights of Tokyo and travel by train to Nagano, where you will then have a little time to explore the city perhaps best known for hosting the 1998 Winter Olympics. Following that you will continue to the spring resort of Yudanaka and check into the family-friendly Ryokan Biyu no Yado, where you still stay overnight and also enjoy a traditional Kaiseki meal. The traditional multi-course experience undoubtedly showcases the incredible flavors of this country’s famous cuisine.

Tokyo

After a night of rest and relaxation in your ryokan, it is time to venture into the valley of the Yokoyu River to Jigokudani Yaen Koen and meet this area’s most famous residents – the Japanese macaques best known as Snow Monkeys. Seeing these fascinating creatures is a truly unforgettable experience, whether they are interacting with each other, keeping an eye on human visitors or simply staying warm with a soak in one of the region’s hot springs. Following this adventure, it is time to head back on the train to Tokyo for a stay in a four-star hotel.

Hakone
Activity and Adventure
No trip to Japan would be complete without experiencing the sheer speed of the Shinkansen bullet train, so day 7 begins with you heading off on this technological marvel for a two-hour trip to Hakone, a town that lies in the picturesque Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Upon arrival, you will swap the futuristic feel of the train for more traditional transport, such as switchback trains and cable cars, and explore the stunning landscape that this region has to offer. You will then take to the high seas of Lake Ashi in a pirate ship to see the jaw-dropping splendor of Mount Fuji. After another action-packed day, it is time to retire to Kinnotake Tonosawa, a four-star ryokan where you will get to enjoy great food, relax in a hot spring bath and sleep in the traditional style on a futon.

Day 8 is a free day in Hakone, so you get to set the tone and pace of your activities. Whether you have a wander around the stunning sculptures of the Hakone Open-Air Museum, opt to explore the incredible volcanic valley of Owakudani or do something else entirely, you’re sure to have a great time.

9-12
Kyoto
General tour/ City
After two days in Hakone, it is time to head back onto the bullet train for the three-hour journey west to the island of Honshu and the city of Kyoto. Once you’ve checked into a four-star family-friendly hotel, you will then head out to explore the incredible cuisine of this beautiful and historic city with a walking food tour. Culinary delights you are sure to experience include ramen noodles, octopus dumplings are known as takoyaki and kushikatsu, deep-fried meat and vegetables served on a skewer.

Japan is, of course, famous for its traditional arts and crafts such as origami and flower arranging, and you will get the chance to try your hand at some of these on your second day in Kyoto. Held at an instructor’s house, the session is an ideal opportunity to immerse yourself in some of this country’s rich culture.

How you wish to spend your final day in Kyoto is entirely up to you and there is a range of options you can consider. Kyoto’s stunning ancient architecture is a sight to behold, so you could take the opportunity to see the incredible wooden castle at Nijo or the stunning shrine of Fushimi Inari-Taisha. Alternatively, you could opt to see more wildlife with a trip to the monkey park at Arashiyama or take a half-day to see the wild deer in Nara.

Your incredible trip of a lifetime in Japan will then draw to a close on the following day when you will begin your journey home from Osaka.
