DRIVING TIPS IN NORWAY

If your next trip to Norway involves a lot of driving (something which makes for a perfect holiday!), you may want to brush up on the rules of the road to make your journey complication free.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

  • When driving in Norway remember that you have to drive on the right-hand side of the road.

  • Seat belts are compulsory for front and rear seat occupants.

  • All children must be firmly strapped in using approved safety equipment that matches their age, size and weight. Children under 135 centimetres must have their own seat or safety restraint (babies in a cot). Children over 36 kilos, or 135 centimetres, can use a normal seat.

  • There are severe penalties for drink driving in Norway so please be aware of the rules. The legal limit is 20 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

  • Use of mobile telephones whilst driving in Norway is an offence.

  • Third party insurance is compulsory and green cards are highly recommended. Without it, visitors with motor insurance in their own countries are allowed the minimum legal cover. The Green Card tops this up to the level of cover provided by the visitor’s own policy.

The legal limits are clearly signposted but are generally as follows:

BUILT-UP AREAS AND TOWNS50 km/h

DUAL CARRIAGEWAYS AND MOTORWAYS90 – 100 km/h

WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING ALONG

When driving in Norway it is compulsory to have:

​

  • At least one visibility vest in your car

  • Your driving licence with you at all times.
