DRIVING IN SWEDEN

RULES AND REGULATIONS

  • When driving in Sweden remember that you have to drive on the right-hand side of the road.

  • Seatbelts must be worn at all times by front and rear-seat passengers when travelling in a car.

  • You must be aged 18 or older and hold a valid driver’s license.

  • The legal alcohol limit in Sweden is stringent, and the limit is 0.02% of alcohol in your blood.

  • Your headlights must always be switched on and set to dipped beam even in the daytime.

  • Tyres requirements during summer and the winter season are as follows. Tread depth during summer conditions is 1.6 mm. Tread depth during winter is 3 mm.

  • When driving a car, during the period 1 December to 31 March, you should have winter tyres on your vehicle if there are winter conditions. If you pull a trailer, the trailer should also have winter tyres.

  • Winter tyres may be studded or non-studded during winter months.

  • Studded tyres are prohibited between 16th April – 30th September unless winter conditions are prevailing.

SPEED LIMITS

Speed limits range from 110 km/h (65mph) on main highways, 70 km/h (43mph) on smaller roads, and 50 km/h (31mph) in towns and cities.

  • Warning triangle

  • First aid kit

  • Tow rope

  • Jump leads

  • Reflective jacket

  • Fire extinguisher

  • Beware of the game – moose, deer, etc. as this constitutes a very real danger on many roads (a yellow warning triangle with a red border depicts the animal most common on a particular stretch of road).
