13 Prague photos that prove the city is straight out of a fairy tale

The camera doesn’t lie, especially not when you’re scrolling through perfect Prague photos. Capture them yourself or admire the Prague photography of strangers, who have immortalised the city’s enchanting vistas on film.

1. Prague Castle

Prague Castle remains one of the most iconic panoramic pictures of Prague. The 1000-year-old UNESCO World Heritage site is the largest castle complex in the world. In fact, it wouldn’t be a stretch of the imagination to picture Beauty and the Beast wandering its 70,000 m² complex grounds.

2. Charles Bridge

For the ultimate envy-inducing Prague photography, go before sunrise to catch the sun’s rays slowly dawning on the city’s most famous bridge. It’s also the best chance of having the bridge to yourself. The 14th-century bridge, with its stony saints, is a must on any Prague photography checklist.

3. Old Town Square

The Old Town Square, or Staroměstské náměstí in Czech, is the heart and soul of the city. Before stopping to add this to your epic collection of Prague photos, marvel at the city’s many iconic sites, most notably the Astronomical Clock with its Walk of the Apostles. Then get lost in the winding labyrinth of lanes that spill out from the city’s centre.

4. A sea of red roofs

Soak up the views from Prague Castle. Better still, capture them forever on camera. You’ll have an opportunity to work off all that sugary medovnik (more on that below) climbing up the Old Town Hall Tower for the best views over the city. Here you can admire the sea of red-roofs adorning honey-hued façades that jostle for space in the sea of buildings below.

5. The change of seasons

Sleeping Beauty may have missed the drama of the changing seasons, but you certainly don’t need to. The City of Spires is as magical in the summer sunshine as it is frosted with snow in the colder months. There are over 200 parks and green spaces scattered throughout the city, which offer dramatic beauty for every season.

6. Christmas markets

Prague may be enchanting year-round, but when Christmas comes rolling in, the magic kicks up a notch. There are several Christmas markets in Prague, but none quite as storybook-special as the Christmas Market in Prague’s Old Town ‘Staromestske Namesti’.

The most distinctive thing about Czech Christmas markets are the scent of svařené víno and Starozlata Medova (warm honey liqueur). However, a favourite take-home gift remains the famous Czech Christmas potpourri called purpura.

7. Prague cafés

Forget the Princess and the Pea. In Prague, the only food you’ll want to find under your mattress is the city’s sweet treats. At the turn of the 20th century, Prague’s most famous cafés were the haunt of the city’s intellectuals, artists and creatives. Today, follow in their artistic footsteps and seek out trdelník, medovnik (a type of honey cake), apple strudel and, over Christmas, the traditional gingerbread.

8. The Botanical Garden

Prague Botanical Garden at Charles University is the oldest botanical garden in the country and features many beautiful subjects for a range of Prague photos. After a busy day of exploring, you’ll find greenery and a good dose of peace and quiet in the heart of the city centre here.

9. Picture-perfect outdoor dining

Never far away, the Vltava River winds its way through this ancient city. At its edge are flower-box filled cafés where patrons can enjoy a local Pilsner Urquell or glass of chilled Riesling. Put the camera down, forget about snapping award-winning Prague pictures for a minute and simply relax.

10. Riverside strolls

In summer, pop into the supermarket to stock a picnic basket of delectable local fare which you can enjoy on the sidelines of a leisurely stroll along the river. The cooling breezes off the Vltava will leave a spring in your step.

11. Prague State Opera House

Even Cinderella in her finest would be envious. Deck yourself out in your own glass slippers and slip away for a night at the Prague State Opera House. Enjoy an evening marvelling at Bohemia’s most celebrated performers, but take care to snap your photos outside.

12. City streets at sunset

Hit the streets for incredible views and to absorb the architectural beauty around every corner. Bookmark this trio of streets – Šmeralova (Letná), Slezská (Vinohrady) and Masarykovo nábřeží – and watch the architectural treasures whirl in the river’s surface.

Prague pictures like these, not even your fairy godmother could conjure up.

13. Prague magic hour

As the sun sets on another magnificent day in Prague, the city glows golden with the touch of King Midas himself. Sunset over the Czech capital’s treasured icons will leave you spellbound, not to mention add some magic to your own Prague pictures.
